Go Green! Planning Your Eco-Friendly Wedding

Every year we get more and more new favors, and this year we couldn’t help but notice that eco-friendly wedding favors are becoming more and more popular.  I personally love eco-friendly favors, because majority of them are practical…and so cute!  Here at our Little Things office, I encourage everyone to be eco-conscious—I insist on recycling, try not to waste a lot of paper or packaging materials, and recently even purchased recycled post its!  (We use so many of them anyway.)  If you even look at my favorite favors section, it says that I love eco-friendly favors, and even features a couple of my favorites, including this “Write from my Heart” Eco-Friendly Note Pad.  I couldn’t have been more thrilled to decorate our display windows this month, because we decided on an eco-friendly theme.  And yes, they came out fantastic, if I do say so myself.  The centerpiece is a green lime tree, set on a natural earth tone table cloth.  The runner is a sort of bamboo material, and green napkins are folded fan style on the plates.  Each place setting is adorned with green topiary place card holders that incorporate with the look of the centerpiece, leaf votive tea light holders, and these Tree Design Wooden Favor Boxes, which I also love.  Surrounding the table setting are a number of other eco-friendly favors, mostly in brown or green hues to match the color scheme.  If you walk by the window you’ll see a variety of bird nests, wooden birdhouses, natural fans, seed favors, and more.  These favors aren’t just cute, but they’re good for the environment, too.

There are a number of other ways to really go green with an eco-friendly wedding besides your favors.  For starters, your invitations are the first thing you’re going to choose.  Not only can you have them printed on recycled paper, but you can have them eco-friendly right down to the ink:  environmentally friendly ink is usually soy-based.  Consider recycled paper for your other paper goods, too:  place cards, save the dates, thank you cards, programs, and possibly even your menu—which can feature organic food, and even be served on organic dinnerware.  There are also plenty of organic wines to sample and choose from, too.

Even though flowers technically do grow in the ground, cut flowers are actually very toxic.  Luckily, simply by some researching, you’ll be able to find organic floral suppliers.  Another option is growing your own flowers, or maybe choosing greenery instead—that will really coordinate with your “green” wedding!  Your attire can be eco-friendly too:  if you’re looking for a light, summery dress to wear at your beach themed wedding, organic cotton is a great choice.  The hot weather isn’t for everyone, though, so if your event takes place in a cooler season, cotton may be a little too thin.  Besides cotton, other organic fabric can include hemp or bamboo.  Plus, if you’re looking for colors for your bridesmaids’ dresses, you can always choose dresses made with low-impact/vegetable dye.  With a little bit of research, you can also find eco-friendly wedding bands.  Mining, whether it is for gold or other gems, is actually very destructive.  So, another great idea is to favor some hand-me-downs.  If you don’t have someone to pass a ring along to you, shop around at thrift shops for older, antique rings.  You’d be surprised at the quality after a little TLC.  Not only will the rings have a vintage feel and look, but they’ll have a little more of a sentimental background.

What Would Your Wedding Song Be?

The other day one of us decided to ask, “What would your wedding song be?”  This question seemed to spark quite a conversation.  As mentioned in the last update, Alecia & Kristi are newly engaged.  So for them, this question called for a serious decision.  Alecia decided on Two is Better Than One by Boys Like Girls.  She and Marten thought it perfect when they first heard it.  Kristi’s choice was The Day Before You by Rascall Flatts.  Finally, (although I’m not getting married any time soon) mine was Somewhere Over the Rainbow sung by Jason Castro.  Or perhaps, I’m Yours by Jason Mraz (I have a thing for acoustics).  Here at our office, we are always singing along to something (our artist of choice at the moment, and for the past two years is Lady Gaga).  We even have a toy microphone that really has a speaker in it!  Alecia and I are constantly being made fun of for singing loudly when we hear a good song, and I am always making plans to go sing karaoke.  Who doesn’t love music?  We all have that song we play when we’re in a good mood, an angry mood, or a sad mood.  That’s why music themed wedding favors are such a great choice:  because they’re universal.

New Beginnings for Little Things Employees!

Congratulations to two of our employees here at our Little Things Favors office in Sayreville, NJ!  Just recently have Alecia and Marten, and Kristi and Steve announced that they are getting married!  Alecia, our office manager, announced her engagement to Marten on June 14th.  We were so excited to hear the news, and were even more excited when we saw the ring!  Alecia’s ring has a very vintage look to it, which was exactly what she wanted.  The diamond is low set with intricate detailing on the profile.  The design of the ring is actually called Tulip.  Prior to the proposal, Alecia had really wanted an engagement party, and even a reception featuring a damask theme.  Since the ladies here are in her bridal party, we couldn’t stop talking about black and white wedding favors, and lots of diamonds and sparkles.  But now as she looks at eligible venues for both the engagement party and reception, her ideas are taking a sharp turn.  She’s found gorgeous pumpkin patches and farm fields with indoor and outdoor reception areas that give a cozy and comforting feel.  So now she seems to be veering more towards a fall theme, at least for her engagement party now.  She’s 100% certain about hosting her engagement party as a brunch.  So now it’s talk of chocolate browns, golden oranges and deep coppers.  And since it’s a favorite here at the office, of course she’ll be displaying Pumpkin Design Brownies on her tables!  Yum!  Although the rest of us girls loved the idea of a damask themed wedding, it’s her big day.  But we still get to plan the bachelorette party!

Now it’s Kristi’s turn in the spotlight:  Steve just proposed to her on Thursday, July 8th.  We didn’t just hear about it – we all witnessed it!  Steve surprised her at work and proposed to her right on the sidewalk outside of our showroom.  The rest of us were peeking out the door, and couldn’t stop clapping (and some of us even crying) for the two of them!  Kristi was so surprised, however I can’t say the same for all of us…Steve had consulted Erica a month ago!  He then swept Kristi right out the door for a long weekend down the shore.  Kristi’s engagement ring is more high set, and there is no better word to describe it than sparkly!  I personally think that the ring almost looks like a flower, and has a very classic look.  Since they’ve only been engaged for exactly a week now, they haven’t planned much so far.  But we do know that Kristi favors the color eggplant, which seems to be trending this wedding season.  She also likes the idea of a “Sculpture Garden” theme, which could easily feature numerous favors from our Eco-Friendly Section. Congratulations to both of you!  We can’t wait for the weddings—it’s a race to the altar!

All About Wedding Cake: Ideas, Cake Servers & Cake Toppers

It seems that every time you go to a wedding, at some point in the evening you’ll hear someone ask, “have you seen the cake?”  Your guests will usually rave over the grandeur of the cake, or its lack of.  The truth is, a wedding cake is not only your dessert, but a tradition during any wedding reception.

This tradition actually dates back to the Roman Empire, when a loaf of bread was used and broken over the bride’s head by the groom, symbolizing his dominance over her.  Today loaves of bread have evolved to extravagant works of art–cakes so realistic looking and fancy that you might feel just a little bit guilty eating it because it’s just so pretty!  And of course, the groom doesn’t smash the cake on the bride.  Traditionally, wedding cakes are white to symbolize purity, but nowadays brides have their cakes decorated to match their color scheme or theme to the T.  Some brides don’t even go with classic tiered cakes–cupcakes are also becoming more popular, and look great displayed on structured tiered stands.  There are other brides who don’t even go with any type of cake at all, because they just don’t like cake or dare to be different.  So as an alternative, you can always go with  something a little out of the ordinary and more fun:  try mousse or puddings in wine glasses, topped with whipped cream, berries, or even chocolate shavings if you want to get fancy!  Chocolate fountains are also becoming more and more popular.  Display it on a table and have an array of food laid out for fun dipping.  Use fruit, marshmallows, rice krispies, pretzels, or graham crackers.  And it’s okay to be lazy, so if you’d rather just have a unique tasty treat for your guests to grab and go, our brownies, rice krispies, and gourmet cookies are not only delicious, but beautifully decorated, too!

If you decide to stay traditional and go with a normal wedding cake, you can’t forget the joint task of cutting the cake.  This minor task is actually very ceremonial:  the bride and the groom are supposed to hold onto each other’s hands while cutting the first piece.  This tradition symbolizes the first task that the husband and wife do together in their life as a married couple.  We have the most elegant and beautiful selection of cake servers to choose from, whether you want them to match your theme or personalize them as a memoir of your special day.

When you think cheap wedding favors, you may just think: cheap.  I mean how could something that costs .99 cents be quality?  Of course with many things, you get what you pay for – and that certainly holds true with certain items.  A .50 cent Round Silver Mint Tin, is afterall, a mint tin.  But there are some gems out there that not only are cheap, but of good quality and value.

Here are 10 great cheap wedding favors that are gorgeous, bestselling and very popular.  These are our recommendations to you if you are on a budget and are looking to give something worth while.

  1. Beautifully Beaded Place Card Frames – perfect for displaying your seating assignments and holding your thank you photos.  Available in Silver or Gold and priced just right.  A bestseller and something the girls and I love in the office.
  2. Heart Book Lovers Collection Bookmark – I have been recently reading a few books at night before bed, but I didn’t have a bookmark to mark my page (can you imagine?) So I took a sample of this bookmark from our showroom.  Perfect for weddings and love themed events, but I would also recommend any of the bookmarks in the “Book Lover’s” line  as they are all made the same way just in different designs: heart, fleur de lis, castle, starfish, peace sign, snowflake, key and butterfly.  Although they aren’t very large, they are packaged well and for .89 cents you can’t go wrong.
  3. Personalized Hershey Kisses – Who doesn’t like chocolate? With over 50 designs and at .30 cents each, fill a huge bowl on each table of these yummy treats.  Featured in Modern Bride Magazine.
  4. Calla Lily Bouquet Candles – A bestseller, with good feedback from our customers and pretty to look at.  I really can’t see your guests actually using them, but rather displaying them in their homes.  Really cute design!
  5. Crystal Heart Keychain -  I love these as wedding and bridal shower favors.  I happen to like keychains, and the quality, price and packaging can’t be beat.  One of our favorites in the shop!
  6. Monogrammed Purse Mirror – Perhaps not perfect for a wedding, but great for a shower, these are the one mirrors I would recommend.  While the other mirrors are quite popular, they are made of hard plastic and i think the Monogrammed Mirrors with a fabric overlay, are just better quality for the price at about a dollar.
  7. Place Card Holders – If you are looking for a place card holder, while these are not exceptionally popular, they are of outstanding weight and quality: Contemporary Heart Place Card Holders and Silver Plated Wedding Cake Place Card Holders (Seen in Modern Bride).  I would recommend them to our brides for quality and price.
  8. Butterfly Magnets – (also available in starfish and fall leaf designs) – there are very few refrigerators in this country without a magnet attached to them, so for practical purposes, magnets are fun favors.  The quality of these magnets combined with the cards they come with make an outstanding choice for wedding favors.
  9. Personalized Candy Jars – very popular with our brides this year, you can personalize these in so many colors and designs.  For .99 cents on most of the jars we offer, which includes the personalized stickers, just fill with candy and you have a great pop of color to your tables.  We use our extra jars in our office to hold paper clips and pushpins.
  10. Fleur de lis Soaps – I love the fleur de lis motif and its also quite popular this year among brides.  These soaps smell good, look good and are packaged well for their price.
